St. Philip Neri Church, Lafayette Hill. No viewing Wed. eve. son came to the United States from San Filippo in the still war-ravaged province of Messina, Sicily.

They settled in the 9th and Catharine streets neighborhood. Neither could speak English. Her son said that when they came to the United States they had nothing and "we were sitting on milk boxes. But we were very fortunate. A lot of -people, being Italian, were always ready to help you out.

My mother, she followed that tradition. She helped other people." Soon after arriving in this country, her son enrolled in the first grade and Mom enrolled at Bok Vocational Technical School at night to learn to read and write English. Fiore didn't need Bok for sewing, as Spano explained, "In Italy, kids 9 years old know how to use a needle. My grandmother was a dressmaker." She loved her neighborhood and its people. Many times her son Anthony tried to get her to move within blocks of him in Darby, but she refused.

"My mother could have bought a nice house down the street from me. My brother wanted us all to go to Naples, Fla. She never wanted to move. She said, 'I know everybody here. I walk one block, I'm at the Ninth Street "It's something like a magnet in Philadelphia," Anthony Spano said.

"I grew up in that neighborhood. Years ago, nobody had television in the house. They'd sit on the step or sometimes sleep outside. My father played the mandolin or guitar, someone else played the accordion. We entertained ourselves, like neighbors.

Things have changed, but not like the suburbs, where you may run into your neighbor coming home in the evening. But it's everybody to themselves." Even though Anthony moved to Delaware County 32 years ago, the family remained close. A few times everyday, they called one another. If Mom got her son's recording, she would always say, "Hi Tony.
