50 PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS 'Buddy' Lieberman, Police By Jim Nicholson tracked by his Daily News Staff Writer Deaths Services were to be held this morning for Dr. Alexander "Buddy" Lieberman former assistant chief surgeon for the Philadelphia Police Department, who died Sunday. He was 71 and lived in Wyncote, Montgomery County. He was a doctor who would rather read T.S. Eliot than play golf.

He was a doctor who left the committees and chairmanships of medical societies for others and was more comfortable being a people's doctor than a doctor's doctor. He was a doctor who, on second thought, sometimes mused that he should have been an English teacher. Glancing at one patient with neurological problems prompted Buddy to ask his son if the patient had "clonus." His son said the chart didn't note it. Buddy took the person's foot, pushed it upward and held it there. In moments it began jerking, a clear indication that he had the disorder. In the mid and late 1960s, the Great Society years when social programs were being pushed hard, Lieberman gave up one day a week to be a volunteer at a drug and alcohol clinic in West Philadelphia. In recent years he served on the board at Woodrock in Kensington, where he helped Hispanic youths through a program to structure their time.

He also did work for the JFK Mental Health and Mental Retardation Center. On occasions he told his daughter Beth that drugs constituted "one of the worse tragedies of our society But he was a realist who added that "there will always be a segment of society that will be inSee DEATHS Next Page Masco Young, 66, Journalist L.
