Rushing Record Still Unreal to Aguirre if VI 7P I -vV 1 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL aeaninj out another dogeared notebook, or, introducing some heroes from the 10th weekend of the city high school football season: Perhaps by Friday, the significance will hit Paul Aguirre like a couple of hard-charging, 250-pound linemen. No running back in the history of the five-county Philadelphia area has accumulated more career yardage than Aguirre, a 5-6, 175-pound Chestnut Hill Academy senior. Last Saturday.

Aguirre (uh-gear-uh) carried 30 times for 247 yards and a touchdown as coach Jack Plunkett's Blue Devils (8-1) melted to win their fourth consecutive Independence League title. He finishes with 585 carries for 4429 yards and 39 touchdowns. Frankford's Blair Thomas S'A i liii WRLaami (3.941, 1982 to "84) and Valley Forge Military Academy's Mike Rick-etts (4,061. 1975 to 78) surrendered city and area records to Aguirre's onslaught "It hasn't sunk in yet," Aguirre said. "Maybe at the end of this week, when I see teams still playing.

Mangini said. "I could have thrown to Mike Tronoski.

When I got around McCafferyt nobody was there It was great hearing the crowd seeing everybody run toward me having them pile on." During McDevitt's timeout, Mangini said the play "was changed five times, with every one involving tailback Joe Deteingaro." According to Manzi, at the end of the timeout quarterback Matt Backsar walked over, "looked me straight in the eye and said. This slotback sweep optionl is what we want to do We hadn't shown it much. Ryan was stacked pretty tight It was a matter of Scott beating one man to the corner." Said Mangini: "I knew Fd get it sometime. When the time was right, he'd call my play." HE'S A BIGGER MAN FOR IT Ken St Clair is no dumb lineman. But you may officially call him bloated.

Knowing he'd be moving from end to tackle along La Salle's defensive line. St Clair spent the offseason packing away large quantities of grub. The result. Although he opened last season at 210. the 6-3 senior now goes 245.

"I didn't want to be some Httle guy in there getting knocked around." St. Clair said, laughing. "So. I ate a lot Got a little fat. "I'm not that big of an eater.

I eat little meals. But I eat them a lot. Once an hour." Saturday, until a sprained right ankle forced his departure from a Catholic North semifinal, St Clair helped the Explorers fashion a dominant defensive performance in a 14-0 win over Father Judge. The Crusaders had 55 yards total offense and did not get a first down until 0:41 remained in the third quarter. "Oh.

yeah." said St. Clair, when asked whether he expected a shutout. That was our goal. We were mad because we didn't get one last time 126-71. especially coach (Joe) CoUstra.

"Coach was telling as things Judge was saying. They were going to kill us. La Salle doesn't know what they're doing. They'll never make it anywhere. Judge has the revenge factor.

It got us madder, got us wanting to beat Judge even more. I guess Judge was saying those things. Doesn't matter. Anything to get us psyched up." Aside from St Clair, who is receiving I-AA interest, the Explorers regularly juggle 12 players John Slowick, Jim Convey. Keith Conlin, Dave Gathman, Jeff Fafara, Craig Fitzgerald, Martin Feeny.

Kevin Schmidt, Brian Daly, John Butler, Jerry Rock and Jim on defense. The unit has allowed just 20 points in the past six games. Bonner lined up with five men clearly in the backfield on three successive plays. No flags were thrown Judge tackle Joe DiCicco wore No. 67 instead of No. 63 against La Salle. Said assistant Mike Mulherria: "His mother washed his jersey and put it on the line.

The numbers weren't anything like they've been the past two seasons, but we were winning, so that was great." Aguirre's line included center Rick Knox, guards Kevin Magee and Jay Gress, rotating tackles Josh Mechem, Don Cramp and Brendan Kilfeather and tight end Tom Graf. The fullback was Josh Jennings. The Blue Devils used the and split backs. Despite his size, Aguirre has drawn strong interest from Penn. The feeling is mutual, and he has applied for early admittance.

"People say. 'You're not the biggest guy in the but I feel I can run anywhere as long as the linemen block," he said. 'Tve never wanted to be 6-1, 220. I never thought that would make me a better back. My size is good for the way I run.

"He has to be a heady, aware kid. aside from having talent," coach Pat Manzi said. "We have complicated Mocking schemes and he's always getting his brains beat out He doesnt get called on much, but when he does, it's big.

Big pass, big catch, big run. He has to be that clutch type of kid." Manzi was discussing junior Scott Mangini, whose late-game efforts lifted McDevitt over Archbishop Ryan, 16-12, in a Catholic North semifinal at Northeast last Saturday night. With 328 left and McDevitt trailing, 12-9. the 5-7, 155-pound Mangini used blocks by pulling guards Gavin Lawrence and Brian Dougherty to turn his first carry, a reverse, into a 29-yard gain to Ryan's 3. Then, on fourth-and-goal from the 1.

he took another reverse this time there was an option to pass and steamed into the end zone. Mangini was brushed by hard-charging defensive back Jim McCaffery. but it was Bo-man's land thereafter.
