09 15, (1987 PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS EVI2M VIIAO AlLS 61. 1 Death Notices Death Notices Deaths Aneila S. Liwosz, 101; Immigrant Suffered Life's Blows Gracefully By LESLIE SCISM Timothy's Church, Levick and Bat- Daily News Staff Writer Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Aneila S. Liwosz, a hardworking Polish-born woman who had come to the United States as a 16- year-old seeking a better life, but whose time had never been easy. Liwosz, who died Friday at the age of 101, was known for accepting all of life's blows gracefully.

She had sailed to this country as a teen-ager against her parents' wishes, her daughter, Amelia Liwosz, recalled yesterday. "She just wanted to come to America, she wanted to see what America was about." Amelia said. "She worked in the fields to save the money (for the voyagel. Her mother didn't want her to come over. Her mother was running after the train, trying to get her to come back." Liwosz was determined that life would be easier in America than on a small farm in Poland.

But she strug. gled, from her start in South Philadelphia, where she joined Polish friends. She spent her first week in a blouse factory working for free; her employer said training as a presser wasn't worth any pay. From then on, she earned slim wages wielding heavy irons in Philadelphia's garment industry. She married a fellow Pole, but he died at 32.

Her daughter remembers the tough times her mother had raising five children in a cramped "faith, hope and charity" rowhouse in Northern Liberties. "She continued to work in a factory," Amelia said. "In the summer they didn't have enough work, so in the winter you had to save for the summer months." Bad health forced her to retire at 55. Aneila Liwosz had no pension, and from then on Amelia, who had begun working as a 14-year-old, supported her. Through it all, "she never complained," said Amelia, who later moved her mother to the Northeast.

"My mother was not a complainer. She took everything in stride." She also did not regret her move to America. "She just loved it here," Amelia said. She recalls her mother's return from her sole visit to Poland. "I said, 'Do you intend to go She said, Aneila Liwosz' pleasures included her Roman Catholic eligion.

"She always had the rosary beads in her hand every day," Amelia said. "She went to Mass. whenever she could." She delighted in running errands in Center City and playing bingo. Even into her late 80s, when her health began declining, "she would go into town two or three times a week, shopping or paying the bills. If there was a sale, she'd go down." Into her 90s, she was still playing bingo.

"If there was bingo, my mother went," the daughter said. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a son, Edward, nine grandchildren, 29 great dren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Three sons, Philip, John and Rudolph, are deceased. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. tomorrow at St.

Gormley Patrick J. Gormley, an Irish-born immigrant with a sixth-grade education who took immense pride in his ability to run heating and cooling systems to perfection, died Sunday. He was 90 and lived in Holmesburg. Gormley came alone to America following service in the British army in World War I. He joined relatives in Philadelphia and shortly sent for his wife and first born child.

He helped build the Broad Street Subway, labored in commercial laundries and mined near Wilkes Barre, Pa. But it was learning the ins and outs of heating and cooling systems that challenged him most, said his daughter, Patricia Paul. Most of his work was done in Center City theaters and movie houses. "He was very proud of his work," Paul said. "If there was something wrong, he'd fix it.

If he couldn't, he would go to any kind of extreme to learn to fix She recalled how she had taken his dinner to him on many Sunday evenings. "You could eat off the floors of the engine rooms where he worked," she said. Gormley would have been 91 next month. He was in. "fantastic health" and was running errands in Center City the day he had his first heart attack last Wednesday, Paul said.

"He ran me ragged," she said. "Everybody's been calling me, so shocked. Everybody remarks on how they'd see him running up and down the street." She recalls him as "very caring, very understanding. He would do anything for a friend. He would say, can I do? Just let me know what you His friends all loved him.

Anybody who was sick, he would go visit them in the hospital. He would not let a funeral pass, no matter where it was." Gormley's wife, Margaret died 12 years ago. In addition to daughter Patricia, he is survived by a son, Thomas two other daughters, Elizabeth Grumbrecht and Margaret DeStefanis; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
