Since then, Sargent has improved his videotape-to-film process and has tried once again to film "Stop the World," this time with Sammy Davis Jr. re-creating his recent" stage role.

A less-than-subtle actor who never worked very well on screen. Davis manages to make the role and the plot seem even more grotesque. (His version fails in the same way that the Peanut cartoon characters fail on screen: Blown up Amazon proportions, they seem ugly and unpleasant). EVEN WITHOUT HIS trademark jewelry, Davis seems overdone here. The whole point to "Stop the World" is its simplicity simple to the point of being predictable.

But Davis has a way of making even his all-black costume seem gaudy. But the songs are fine "Gonna Build a Mountain," "What Kind of Fool Am and "Once in a Lifetime" reminding us that "Stop the World" was always essentially an album of good songs with live-action liner notes. One of his more renowned videotaped failures was his 1965 film version of the the Anthony Newley-Leslie Bricusse stage musical, "Stop the World I Want to Get Off," a vehicle which looked gross in close-up, alternately grainy and muddy, and was marred by its strident and miscast star, Tony Tanner. The story of Littlechap, a British Everyman, just didn't adapt well to the big screen. It would have been bad enough on regular film stock, but shot on videotape and without the participation of its much-need- "ES" Hoi Si ML Ut, 8GNC it to 'L7 ERIC I1HS TWIN WOO0H1TTJIUU4 Unci OpHH talrtbttaattK IBllnsMn ERtC TWIN OUTt Sf DIRECTOR taitmna.n tomkliiMi.Pi I aCtorr, ii U. Some plays can't be filmed and this version of "Stop the World" proves that conclusively.

It's simply too gross, too mechanical and too cold for the camera's eye. And so, what might have passed for professionalism on stage looks amateurish on screen. A vanity film for Davis and his fans.
