M. Sunrise Sunday Moon rises DELAWARE VALLEY i on y.rm Of Ej NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY A heavy snow warning in West Virginia predicting accumulations of four inches or more remained in effect Saturday as winter storms continued to direct their wrath throughout much of the nation. In the Great Lakes region, snow was continuing to fall with accumulation reported in central Illinois and over portions of the Ohio Valley into the northern Appalachians. More than a foot of the white stuff in Minnesota forced the closing of numerous highways due to a new snowfall that compounded problems from an earlier storm. It was mostly wet, however, over the south Atlantic Coast states as rain and scattered showers soaked the region.

Rain will fall today over the central Atlantic Coast states before changing to snow and turning colder from the north i Atlantic states into the eastern Ohio Valley. Sunny skies and colder temperatures are on tap over the Gulf Coast states with showers and thunderstorms in southern Florida. The Pacific Northwest into Idaho can look for rain. Paul A. There is no evidence that widely advertised educational toys are more educational than conventional toys, according to a child psychologist and a family-life specialist.

During the Christmas shopping season, many parents looking for toys for their children may be influenced by advertising which indicates that there are critical ages in which the child must be provided "educational toys" for proper intellectual development. But Dr. H. Robert Quilich, director of the Department of Psychology at the Nevada Mental Health Institute, says the parents might as well buy what the youngsters want. "There is no published research available to indicate exactly what an educational toy is or that they are any better than conventional toys," he said.

"I'm not attacking manufacturers of educational toys. Some toys may be educationally more valuable than others, but there simply is no research to support that idea. 'I must conclude that either the research simply doesn't exist, or business is so competitive that manufacturers can't afford to release their findings," he said. Hazel Hardy, family life specialist at the University of Nevade here, said some toys have educational value, but the consumer needs to know which ones and in what specific ways. She said pediatricians who have studied the matter reported there is no evidence that scientifically designed toys are in any way superior to the usual household items available to most children, and there is no evidence that a systematic program of "educational" toys accelerates intellectual competence.
