South Jersey THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Tuesday, July 7, 1998 Obituaries Roy Eckert, 71, farmer, outdoorsman By S. Joseph Hagenmayer INQUIRER CORRESPONDENT Roy H. Eckert, 71, a Hainesport farmer, outdoorsman and community leader, died Saturday at his Hainesport home. Born on the Hainesport farm that had been i in the Eckert family since the 1870s, Mr. Eckert was the fourth generation to work the land.

He began farming as a child and operated a dairy for most of his life. I He retired in the mid-1980s. He also raised sweet corn with his son, Brian, operating a roadside stand on Route 38 from 1968 to 1978. "He was an unassuming man who enjoyed the independence of farming," his son said. Mr.

Eckert served on the Hainesport Board of Education for 11 years in the '1950s and 1960s, including several years as board president. His leadership helped to bring about the modernization of the Hainesport School in the early 1960s, his son said. An outdoorsman, Mr. Eckert "intimately knew South Jersey's Pine Barrens from canoeing its rivers, hiking its trails, and driving its roads," his son said. Mr.

Eckert also had hiked significant portions of the Appalachian Trail. His interest in history led to his membership in several area historical organizations. He served as a member of the Batso Citizens Committee and also frequently ran demonstrations of the grist mill at Batso Village in the Wharton State Forest. Mr. Eckert marched with Buchanan's Fifth Artillery, a Burlington County based Revolutionary War reenactment group, and took part in the 1981 bicentennial reenactment of the Battle of Yorktown.

He was a member of the New Jersey Farm Bureau, the Appalachian Trail Conference, Mount Holly Lodge 14 Free and Accepted Masons, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hainesport. After. attending the Hainesport School, Mr. Eckert graduated in 1945 from Mount Holly High School (now Rancocas Valley Regional High School), where he was an honor student in mathematics and agriculture.

He also was a forward on the high school's basketball team that made the state tournament. In addition to his son, he is survived. by his wife of 51 years, M. Elma Easlick Eckert; daughter, Jeanne Nasrallah; two grandsons; two brothers; and a sister. Services will be at 11 a.m.

today at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Marne Highway, Hainesport. Burial will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hainesport. Memorial donations may be made to the Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Drive, Suite 3090, Marlton, N.J.

Peterson, 90, a retired pipe fitter, died Saturday at the Masonic Home, Burlington Township. Born in Camden, he was a Cherry Hill resident for 45 years before moving to the Masonic Home three years ago. Mr. Peterson was a pipe fitter for the Pipe Fitters Union Local 322 in Winslow, where he was a member for 48 years, and had served as the chairman and secretary of the Apprenticeship Committee. He retired 25 years ago.

An active Mason, he was a past master of the Haddonfield Lodge 130 Free and Accepted Masons, now the Haddonfield-Cherry Hill Lodge 15, and a member of the Excelsior Consistory in Collingswood. He was a member of the Nelson Craig High Twelve. He was a charter member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Cherry Hill. He is survived by sons, Robert N. John David and Alfred daughters, Louise Fisher, Ellen Norrie, Ruth Beringer, and Anna Keppen; 23 grandchildren; 28 greatgrandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Gray.

He was the widower of Helen Risley Peterson. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. with Masonic services at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Holl-Murphy Funeral Home, West End Avenue at Kings Highway, Haddonfield. Funeral services will be private followed by burial in Harleigh Cemetery, Camden.

He received his GED while serving in the armed forces. He received a Bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University and his Master of Science degree from Central Michigan State University after having served honorably in both WWII and the Korean Conflict, retiring after over 40 vears of service. He also retired from the Teamster's after working as a civilian emplovee in Clear, Alaska with the Ballistic Early Warning System (BMEWS) and on the Alaskan pipe line. Prior to his death, he retired from federal service as a civilian employee at Fort Dix, NJ. Mr.

Swann leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife of over 47 years, Alice M.
