Patterson admired the Soviet Union as a model for future societies, one that held the promise of racial equality. In 1932, she led a group of 22 black writers, artists and intellectuals including Hughes and poet Dorothy West to the Soviet Union. They were to act in a film for a Moscow company about discrimination against blacks in the United States. The film was never made, which led to international headlines and caused a rift in the group, part of which dubbed Mrs. Patterson "Madame Moscow" for being too trusting of the Soviets.

In 1940, Mrs. Patterson married Patterson, a prominent member of the American Communist Party who organized the Civil Rights Congress and was jailed for contempt of Congress by Sen. Joseph McCarthy for refusing to identify the group's supporters. He died in 1980. Mrs.

'Moondog Hardin, 83, street musician, composer the School of Nursing at St. Agnes Hospital, Philadelphia. She was president of the Southampton Women's Club and a director of the Southampton Library, and previously was treasurer of the Southampton Fire Company women's auxiliary for many years. She was a communicant at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church in Southampton. A talented quilter, Mrs.

Bennis had won a number of contest awards. She also enjoyed making dolls and crafts for family members and friends. She is survived by her husband of tive editor of the weekly Jewish Exponent from 1963 to 1970, and before that he spent nine years on the editorial staff of TV Guide. He briefly practiced law in Philadelphia with his father, Harry, a state senator, but switched to journalism in 1950, working as a reporter with newspapers in Wilmington, Atlantic City and Bethlehem. Mr.

Shapiro grew up in Strawberry Mansion and graduated from Central High School in 1937. He went on to earn a degree in econom- face when he was 16. He studied music at the Iowa School for the Blind for a year before moving to New York City in 1943 to continue his musical education, which at the time was rudimentary. Mr. Hardin started as a percussionist, building many of his own drums.

Through the 1950s, he tried Latin music and jazz, recorded some albums on 78 r.p.m. and worked in a number of bands. He became something of a celebrity after Walter Winchell mentioned him in a newspaper column. Diane Arbus photographed him, and would occasionally buy him lunch at a cafeteria near Carnegie Hall. Two albums of Mr.

Hardin's atonal jazz and madrigals were released in 1969 and 1971 by Columbia Records and drew good reviews. Mr. Hardin, of German and English descent, moved to Recklinghausen in what was then West Germany, in 1974, after traveling there for a radio concert. He lived on the streets for a year and was finally adopted by a German family who loved his work. A daughter in the family, Ilona Goebel, became his working partner.

She became his copier and editor. He composed, recorded and occasionally performed in concerts throughout Europe. At least 10 albums of his compositions have been released in Europe since 1977, and his collected works now include 300 canons in the form of madrigals, 100 keyboard works and a self-published four-volume Art of the Canon. ClaSifieds THl DULY NEWS PHIIU.COM 1-800-341-3413 Sorry, offer Is only extended to private or days 1 By Jon Thurber LOS ANGELES TIMES Dressed in his standard garb of "homemade robe, sandals, spear, scraggly beard and a Viking helmet with horns, Louis "Moondog" Hardin was a familiar sight to New Yorkers in the 1960s. Mr.

Hardin, a tall man who was blind and a bit gaunt, would take his place at the corner of 54th Street i and Avenue of the Americas and play his homemade zither, sing in his distinctly atonal manner or beat a drum. At other times, he might recite some poetry. His street theater generally drew a crowd, and the crowd was his living in those days. The corner became "Moondog Corner." But beneath his unquestionably eccentric exterior, Mr. Hardin, 83, -was a talented composer.

In his hours off the street he wrote larger works often based upon a form of the canon (or round) and was welcomed as a guest to rehearsals of the New York Philharmonic. Mr. Hardin's curious life came to an end in a hospital in Munster, Germany, on Sept. 8. The cause of death was heart failure.

"He was the greatest street person that New York has ever produced," said Robert Scotto, a professor of English at Baruch College of the City University of New York, who is working on a book on Mr. Hardin's life. Born in Kansas, the son of an Epis-' copal minister, Mr. Hardin grew up in Wyoming.
