10 Suburbs THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Monday, October 28, 1996 Obituaries Richard Knight Jr. of Gladwyne; was retired insurance executive By Darrell Dawsey INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Richard N. Knight 77, a retired insurance-industry executive, died Friday at his Gladwyne home after a long illness. After his father died in the late 1940s, Mr. Knight took over as managing partner of his family's insurance business, H.C.

Knight and which specialized in marine casualties. He oversaw the 100-year-old company, which his grandfather had founded and his father also had run, until the partnership was dissolved in 1988. Mr. Knight then became director of Posse Walsh and a Blue Bell insurance company. Relatives recalled Mr.

Knight as a sports enthusiast who excelled at a variety of games, particularly golf and squash. He was a member of the Racquet Club of Philadelphia, where his talent for doubles squash was reflected on the tournament boards. He also belonged to several golf clubs, including Gulph Mills and Pine Valley, and was a former president of the Fourth Street Club, where he played bridge, sniff and backgammon. "He enjoyed all kinds of sports, from equestrian as a youth to board games later on in his life," said his son, Richard Knight 3d. A native of Gladwyne, Mr.

Knight spent summers at his family's home on Chebeague Island, Maine, where he had vacationed often since childhood. The family's Gladwyne home, Murray Schaff, led early rock group By Linda Loyd INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Murray Schaff, 69, founder of a nationally known rock-and-roll group, died Saturday after a long illness at Hopkins House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wyncote. He lived in the city's Logan section. At age 14, Mr. Schaff began playing alto saxophone and singing with a group known as The Treniers, who were forerunners of the modern rock-and-roll era, recalled his brother Nathaniel.

In the 1940s, Mr. Schaff formed his own five-piece group, Murray Schaff and the Aristocrats, which traveled throughout the United States and played summers in Wildwood, at the Cafe Bolero, in the 1950s and 1960s. Mr. Schaff appeared with such stars as Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett and Eartha Kitt on the Steve Allen Show. started Don Rickles on his career in Washington, D.C.," his brother said.

"Don Rickles was in the audience and asked Murray to bring him on stage. He did. That started Don Rickles as a comedian" in the early 1950s. Mr. Schaff's group played in cafe society in New York in the early 1970s and at the Living Room, a well-known Manhattan night spot, his brother said.

In 1973, Mr. Schaff opened his own nightclub, The Open End, at 78th Street and First Avenue in New York. The club attracted celebrities and athletes in the New York area, including former New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath and the entire Jets football team, his family said. In 1983, Mr. Schaff gave up his club and returned to Philadelphia.

He took over operation of his parents' gift shop, at 2910 N. Fifth in North Philadelphia. Nathaniel Schaff operates a business next door. Mr. Schaff, who never married, became ill about 13 years ago.

Dalkon Shield developer, 69 Dr. Hugh James Davis 69, who as a professor of gynecology and obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins Medical School developed the Dalkon Shield birth-control device, died of pancreatic cancer Wednesday at his Gibson Island, home. It was his combined lifelong interest in cervical cancer, birth control, and finding a safe alternative to the problem-plagued birth-control pill that motivated Dr. Davis to invent the Dalkon Shield in 1968. Sales of the Dalkon Shield, one of the most widely used intrauterine devices, were suspended by the Food and Drug Administration in June 1974 after 11 deaths and 209 cases of spontaneous abortion were reported.

In 1975, A.H. Robbins, a Richmond, pharmaceutical company that purchased manufacturing rights for the Dalkon Shield from Davis for $750,000, put 2.2 million of the intrauterine devices on the market before discontinuing production the same year. The IUD was finally taken off the market in 1984. Nearly 200,000 lawsuits were brought after the IUD was blamed for causing injuries to women ranging from minor inflammation to infertility and, in some cases, causing death. Under a 1989 settlement, a trust fund of $2.475 billion was set up to pay damages to women claiming injury from the Robbins IUD.

Dr. Davis, a pioneer in laparoscopy, held more than 30 patents for medical instruments us used in abdominal surgery such as tubal ligations.
