Her husband is overly occupied with his work, and when he approaches his wife it is less' with ardor with jealousy. The jealousy is well founded enough, for she has found herself a lover in Paris, a polite, athletic, empty-headed rich bachelor.

He helps fill the emptiness, alleviate the boredom. But she becomes as impatient with him as with her husband. The young man who has aided her Is invited to spend the night by the husband; both find themselves walking alone in the and they meet and it is at this point that Malle becomes most evocative. There is silence as they walk through a misty landscape, as they slowly turn towards each other for the answer to emptiness. There is a casting off of reserve, and their discovery of their need for each other.

It is in these terms that the story is told, and one must compliment Malle for the way he avoids those moments that might cause the tell-tale sniggers of embarrassment in the audience. It is the always evident sincerity and seriousness, which protect against the sleazy and the sensational. Lovemaking there is, and it is as explicit as anything ever done before on the screen, but one senses that it is not shown for the sake of providing a cheap, vicarious thrill, but so that we may be privy to what Malle obviously considers the most meaningful and symbolic moment in the lives of two people. I was reminded of a story by de Maupassant called "Moonlight," in which a priest watches a girl and a boy commit what in his eyes must be an act of sin, and yet he does not disturb them, but walks away with the sense that he has, after all, seen the inscrutable workings of God. In "The Lovers," Malle has come close to seizing the Ineffable.

He makes acceptable, too, the fact that these lovers must leave their previous lives, and regardless of all the conventions they live by, set out together on another road. To do this in such a way that we are not shocked, but convinced; strikes me as a notable achievement Does this mean that Malle is not only condoning adultery, but approving this well-known crime against society? Not at all; he has told a story as he has seen it, and followed it to its inevitable conclusion. The judgments, I fear, are up to us. Hollis Alpert. Natalia Wood "CoA McCall" Color ANOTHER TWO-FISTED ROMANTIC ROLE FOR, ISTED R( caused a considerable stir in Paris with "Les Amants," which will open here shortly as "The Lovert." The reason for the excitement is clear enough. Malle has done something rather rare. He has dealt both boldly and poetically with the story of a love affair; he has kept, it seems to me, within the bounds of good taste; and, at appropriate moments, he has been entirely explicit about certain of the more sensuous aspects of love. Something of a sexual revolution appears to be going on in the cinema, and Malle may well be one of its prophets. He seems- almost frighteningly knowledgeable about the nature of physical passion, and, more important, he has found a way to be expressive in a medium which, for half a century, has been a prisoner of convention when it came to dealing with its favorite subject matter: the varieties of love.

Malle, who is the author of the screenplay as well as its director (it was taken from a novel, "Point de had the assistance of that clever, subtle writer, Louise de Vilmorin, on the always spare and unsentimental dialogue. Malle received his training while working with Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Robert Bresson, and it is possible to see the latter's influence, particularly. There is the same ring of truth, a similar poetic realism. The story itself is a simple one; it is about a married woman of thirty, highly civilized, who finds herself suddenly, startlingly, transformed into a creature of love. The spark occurs under seemingly innocuous circumstances, when her car stalls on the road from Paris to Dijon, she is helped by a young arche-ologist, who drives her to her country home.

In a matter of hours her well-regulated life is at an end. From there on it is only love and uncertainty. But the telling of this story is a poem, a picture, about love, about the banked fires that lie within an individual. The face of Jeanne Moreau flawlessly mirrors the transformation of the woman. It is a cool, well-bred face that we see at first, the corners of the lips turned down in boredom and faint desperation.

The eyes are quiescent, disappointed, but one senses that something wild lurks behind them, waiting for an awakening. The woman has had a cold, frustrating MM M1LGRAM THEATRES aMHak I ll Market 1 fJV 10 2-6007 I nil si NOW PLAYING AT THEATRES LISTED BELOW 1 Doors Opart 10:30 a.m. 1 lMm FIRST TIME AT REGULAR PRICES! ieina LOLLOBRIGIDA lilVA LOLLOBRIGIDA A DRAMA OF BIBLICAL TIMES I BIG STORY OF SIMON PETER OF GALILEE TECHNICOLOR' PAN AVISION Peter LAWFORD' Steve McQUEEH Brian DONLEVY.
