Codings Ave, Codingswood, 08108. Emidio "Mike" Angelo In a 1966 photograph E.

Angelo, 86, a local cartoonist By Ralph Cipriano Inquirer Stuff Writer Emidio "Mike" Angelo, 86, an artist, cinematographer and former Inquirer cartoonist best known for the syndicated comic strip Emily and Mabel, died Sunday of cancer. Emily and Mabel, which ran in The Inquirer and more than 130 other newspapers during the early 1950s, was based on two women who worked in a South Philadelphia soda shop that Mr. Angelo frequented in his youth. In the strip, Emily and Mabel were twin sisters who were unliberated spinsters. They wore the same upsweep hairdos and long Victorian dresses, and they had the same goal in life.

"Their primary purpose in life was to snag a man," said Donna Pierro, Mr. Angelo's daughter. 'They were on the eternal quest, and they always struck out." Mr. Angelo, a resident of Wynnewood, worked at The Inquirer from 1937 to 1954. He also did cartoons for many magazines, including the old Saturday Evening Post, Life and Esquire.

Mr. Angelo, a man whose trademarks were a goatee and an easygoing manner, liked to stay current. He read three newspapers a day. He did not believe in retirement, and he kept working until his last trip to the hospital. Since the early 1980s, Mr.

Angelo worked for the Main Line Times, where he did weekly editorial cartoons and periodically revived Emily and Mabel, who most recently were depicted as being taken with a census-taker. "He was just delighted to keep drawing," said Joan Toenniessen, managing editor of the Main Line Times. During his long career, Mr. Angelo won numerous awards for his cartoons, oil paintings and sculptures, including three Valley Forge Freedom Foundation medals, several silver and bronze medals from the Da Vinci Alliance of Philadelphia, and a gold medal from the Philadelphia Sketch Club. As a cinematographer, he filmed a silent black-and-white movie, Kidnap, starring Burt Lancaster, that was never released.

Mr. Angelo was born in Philadelphia in 1903, a year after his mother and father, a baker, came here from Italy. He studied art from 1924 to 1928 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he won two Cresson Awards, each worth $1,000 for a three-month tour of Europe and study in Paris. After his European travels, Mr. Angelo returned to Philadelphia to become a portrait painter.

His first commissions were for portraits of Main Line dowagers, but he found the work frustrating. The women wanted to look as they had decades earlier, his daughter said, "and that annoyed him greatly. He eventually decided his personality was not suited for the fine arts." In 1947, Mr. Angelo, who was always fascinated by movies, shot Kidnap in Sea Isle City, N.J., strictly for his own amusement. The movie starred Lancaster, an Army buddy of Mr.

Angelo's brother Rocky. In the movie, Lancaster and Mr. Angelo's brothers Rocky and Tim play kidnappers who abduct a 2-year-old girl played by Mr. Angelo's daughter Donna. In a sort of gangland version of Three Men and a Baby, the kidnappers fall for the baby and decide to return her to her parents.

Despite the change of heart, the kidnappers end up serving 30-year jail terms. As an artist, Mr. Angelo had many exhibitions of his work, including one last November at the Penn Wynne Library. For the Main Line Times, Mr. Angelo did editorial cartoons on AIDS, crime and a local campaign to save the old Ardmore Junior High School.

In recent months, when he could no longer climb the steps at the newspaper office in Wynnewood, Mr. Angelo left his cartoons at the front door. "He left me 12 or 13 cartoons which I've still been running," Toenniessen said. Besides his daughter Donna and two brothers, he is also survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Yo-landa Marinelli; daughters, Joya Angelo and Benita Nicholas; four grandchildren, and two sisters. A memorial service will be held at noon Wednesday at the Anthony J.

Vraim Funeral Home, 66 S. State Upper Darby. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon. Contributions in his memory can be made to the American Cancer Society..
