Sunday, March 31, 1991 The Philadelphia Inquirer DINING TO DO Italian cuisine is more modest than the prices would indicate By John V. R. Bull Inquirer Staff Writer With its ultra-modern decor, DeSumma's does not look like a typical neighborhood restaurant, but its modest cuisine is distinctly in the genre. DeSumma's anchors the Justa Farm Shopping Center in Huntingdon Valley. Its attractive peach-andgreen decor includes textured peach wallpaper, pale green wainscoting and trim, and picture windows, framed with bronzed laminate, facing County Line Road.

Gorgeous, lily-shaped sconces in vaguely art deco style complement futuristic ceiling trim; comfortable booths have stuffed vinyl backs in alternating green and dusty rose that match the covers on highbacked chairs at individual tables. A white tablecloth, peach napkins, a anicnic candle and a fresh red carnation and baby's breath in a glass vase are on each table. Pop music is played too loudly. The southern Italian cuisine is reasonably successful, but priced higher than at many other neighborhood restaurants. Sadly, the best part of a recent meal were the thick slices of fresh, wonderfully textured Italian bread that came with dinner, Bulletin board BULLETIN BOARD, from Page 28 all ages, health, stress management.

along with a complimentary dish of roasted green bell peppers swimming in oil that were unexpectedly sprinkled with tiny, spicy-hot red pepper flakes. Fettuccine Alfredo a generous appetizer, was decent egg noodles tossed with backfin crabmeat and two medium-sized shrimp in cream. Although nicely sprinkled with parsley and fresh-cracked pepper, the dish was marred by a superabundance of shell. The chef seems to believe in assertive seasonings, first noticed to startling effect with an appetizer of crunchy-fresh escarole ($3.95) in olive oil and a ton of garlic. It was followed by the usual iceberg lettuce salad with thick cucumber YARD SALE DONATIONS SOUGHT Neighborhood Service Center, a nonprofit umbrella information-referral agency, seeks donations of new or used goods to sell at benefit yard sale in May.

Monkfish Mediterranean style a successful main dish, was a generous chunk of fish marinated in lemon, oil, garlic and paprika, the waitress said, and beribboned with thick marinara sauce. From the blackboard, stuffed veal chop ($17.50) thick, chewy, fairly oozing spinach and mozzarella and coated with a pallid brown sauce was a less successful choice. Vegetables included crunchy cauliflower and broccoli, roasted redskinned potatoes touched with sweet onions and overcooked ziti in tomato sauce. Scrumptious desserts included triple-layer chocolate cake ($3.25) four (not three) layers of dark, fudge-like cake frosted with swirls of chocolate; double-layered lemon torte with walnuts ($2.75) was overpowered by an eye-opening lemon topping. Foamy cappuccino ($2.25) was nicely dusted with cinnamon.
