A Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1988 -The Philadelphia Inquirer 9-D Notices Death Notices Death Notices James H. Dolsen, 103, a founder of the Communist Party U.S.A. Donna St. George Inquirer Staff Writer His was a life bare and basic by appearances, his small apartment equipped with little more than two wooden chairs, a dinette table, sagging bookshelves and stacks of newspaper.

But for James H. Dolsen, the years had been ones of richness, years in which his political beliefs were his abiding and fulfilling pursuit. founder of the Communist Party U.S.A., James H. Dolsen for more than six decades worked to create communist United States. It remained his mission until he died last Wednesday, his 103d birthday, at Presbyterian-University of Pennsylvania Medical Center.

All those years Mr. Dolsen was a political purist. So much was communism a way of life that he never found time to marry and never wanted money for possessions. To him, those things weren't important. It was communism that really mattered.

And thus it was communism that he worked for during a journalistic career of more than five decades and as a party activist who handed out leaflets, lectured students and talked to workers at factory gates. Born in San Francisco, the son of a civil engineer who worked for the railroads, Mr. Dolson was educated at Beloit, a small liberal arts college in Wisconsin, and it was there he found communism, immersing himself in the writings of Marx and Engels. Mr. Dolsen followed his college roommate to Chicago and found a good job at the same hospital.

But already he had joined the old Socialist Party, and it had decided to run him for city alderman. It wasn't long after his picture was seen posted on a telephone pole that he was given an ultimatum at the hospital. "I had thought it over," he recalled during a 1982 interview. "I had read some of Lenin's works, and he said that a revolutionary party has to have a revolutionary nucleus, people who understand, who are willing to get thrown into jail. So I figured that I didn't want to work anymore for a private employer.

I wanted to become an agitator for the political ideas I believed in." And so it started. And by all accounts, Mr. Dolsen never strayed. "He was the most independent, determined, man sights you on a ever goal, met. he When went out to do it and nothing could deter him," said a friend of 38 years, Frances Gabow.

"The party was his entire life even under the most adverse conditions." Mr. Dolsen started with the Communist Party at a 1919 convention in Chicago when the Communist Labor Party split from the old Socialist Party. He chaired the committee to draft the new party's constitution, and then stayed on as a party leader when Warren G. Harding was president of the United States. James H.

Dolsen The rest of his working life he toiled as a journalist for the Daily Worker and its successor, the People's Daily World. And not without sacrifice. Mr. Dolsen faced criminal charges six times, for alleged violations including California's criminal syndicalism law, the Smith Act and Pennsylvania's sedition law. First brought to court in 1921, he was cleared of the last of his convictions by the Supreme Court only in 1957.

Most of the time, Mr. Dolsen, who had studied law for a year at Northwestern University, acted as his own attorney and once, in the 1920s, succeeded against prosecutor Earl Warren, who was later to become governor of California and Chief Justice of the United States. In later years, the white-haired Mr. Dolsen wasn't as fortunate. Tried for conspiracy, he served 10 months in Blawnox Prison near Pittsburgh with six other party members in 1940.

He also faced the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. "I could never make out why they thought I was so especially dangerous. I was listed as one of the most dangerous men in the country," he said in 1982. The party never sought to overthrow the government by violence or force, he always maintained. "We advocate, always, any peaceful avenue open," he said.

His work brought other adventures. Shortly after starting at the Daily Worker, in 1926, he was sent to China to cover what he would later describe as "provincial warlords and their imperialist masters." He stayed in China until 1931, and the book he wrote there Awakening China was the first by an American communist in China. Returning home on the Trans-Siberian Railway, he stopped in Moscow, where he then stayed four years with International Red Aid. His foreign work ended in the mid-1930s, and he was asked to cover international la- Thornton Bradshaw, 71; was head of RCA United Press International NEW YORK Thornton Bradshaw, the former chairman of RCA Corp. who was credited with helping to orchestrate a smooth transition during the company's merger with General Electric died yesterday at New York Hospital.

He was 71. Bradshaw, who more recently was the chairman of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, died at New York Hospital about 6, p.m., said Tom Ross, an NBC spokes-' man. The former consultant to General Electric was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage Monday morning, Ross said.

The mild-mannered executive rose to national prominence during the oil crises of the 1970s as the Arco president who advocated environmental values and such unlikely causes as a windfall profits tax on his industry. In the 1980s, he took the chairmanship of this RCA restored financial health, and then, in a last and highly controversial act, sold it to General Electric Co. Bradshaw was elected chairman of the board and chief executive officer of RCA on July 1, 1981, and remained chairman until his retirement June 30, 1986, following merger of RCA into CE. He was the RCA's seventh chairman and became a director of RCA in January 1972. "Bradshaw's death is a blow to GE and anyone who ever knew him.

My only regret is that I met him only three years ago, at the time of the GE-RCA merger," said John Welch GE chairman. "It was his leadership that brought RCA through the turbulent times of the early '80s, and it was his wise counsel that helped us make the merger smooth, humane and successful," Welch said. "America has lost a great business leader, and all of us from the more competitive company he helped have lost an adviser and a good friend," Welch said. Robert Wright, the president of the National Broadcasting a subsidiary of RCA, called Bradshaw "one of the giants of the television industry." Before joining RCA in 1981, Bradshaw held top management posts with Atlantic Richfield Corp. for more than 24 years.

He was elected president of the company then the Atlantic Refining Co. on June 9, 1964. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Center of Communications, the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, and The Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School, Wright also was a member of the board of trustees of Claremont Colleges and the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton. During World War II he served with the U.S.

Navy on a destroyer in the Pacific Ocean. Bradshaw is survived by his wife, Patricia Salter West, and his children, Priscilla Page of Bryn Mawr, Nancy Poor of Norwell, and Jonathan Bradshaw of Newbury Park, Calif. Arrangements for his funeral and memorial service were not announced. Again, he worked as a party organizer and a journalist. As old age crept up on him and 1 he never a communist revolution come pass in the United States, Mr. Dolsen didn't let up. With blue eyes that gleamed a youthful conviction, he smiled, and he seemed cheery. In his 100th year, on the occasion of the self-publishing of his memoirs called Bucking the Ruling Class Mr. Dolsen said happily, "I'm more of a communist today than ever." He said he was still "propagating everybody I meet, everywhere, every In 1987, Mr.
