C. DURING the next four weeks the debutante will rule the social world. And her sway will be as autocratic as that of the Czar. Society schedules no large affairs for the brief season allotted for the introduction of her fair daughters. All glasses are focussed upon the groups of charming maidenhood and exquisite bouquets are actually showered upon them.

The debutante rarely receives less than thirty bouquets enough to nearly fill a florist's wagon. And the very popular "bud" sometimes gets as many as eighty. I am told that one of last season's debutantes had over one hundred sent to her, receiving the best wishes of a host of friends in a sea of roses. the immense class this season it may be expected that some records will be broken. Certainly there is an opportunity.

"The 'buds' are as numerous as the full-grown roses this season," humorously remarked a prominent society woman the other day, "and I look for fully one hundred entertainments in their honor before Christmas arrives." Several girls made their bow during the past week. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas S. K.

This idea of enlarging the sphere is an admirable one and is entirely likely to accomplish the purpose of having earlier hours at all the functions. It is to be hoped that the established entertainments like the Assemblies, the Benedicks and the Mid-Winter balls will conclude earlier, as they will have a marked effect on the other In Vanitu Fair A BEAUTIFUL dinner was given by Mr. and Mrs. George WT Childs Drexel at their country place, "Wootton." and Mrs. Antonio Yznaga Stewart are spending several weeks with Aire. Stewart's mother, Mrs. Sturgis, at 181o Walnut street. Mr.

and Mrs. Richard Heckscher will close their place at Strafford the first of the month and open their Eighteenth street house. The visit of the Earl of Strafford to this country quickly confirmed the report of his engagement to Mrs. Samuel Col-irate, of New York, who is one of the richest widows in the United States. And shortly after his arrival the admitted that they were to be married, but no date had been! fixed for the ceremony.

As several Philadelphians are acquainted with Mrs. Colgate, there is considerable interest here over the coming nuptials, -which are supposed to take place within a very short time. Probably it is not widely known that the Earl of Strafford is one. of the richest of the English noblemen. He is the fourth possessor of the title and one of the most popular of English aristocrats.

He is nearly 70 years of age, but looks much younger, and has a fine military mien, having been at one time lieutenant-colonel of the famous Coldstream Guards. He has been a widower for twenty years, his wife being the Countess Henrietta Daniskiold Samsoe, of Denmark. The wealth of the Earl of Strafford, whose family name is Byng, runs into the millions. He not only owns acres of land in various parts of England, but he is also the possessor of valuable real estate in the Millwall district of London. He also has a handsome country place, known as Northani Park, in Barnet, Hertfordshire.

Mrs. Colgate is one of the most beautiful and accomplished women in New York society. She is now about 30 years old, and at the death of her husband, five years ago, had left to her a fortune of several millions. She has one child, Adele C. Colgate.

Mrs. Colgate was presented at the English court two years ago by the late Ambassador Bayard, and from that time on she has been in the best London society. Mr. and Mrs. Edward S.

Buckley will close their place at Chestnut Hill this week and open their Spruce street house. Their daughter, Miss Margaret Buckley, is one of the season's debutantes. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh D.

Scott have returned from their wedding trip to Europe and are stopping with Mrs. Thomas A. Scott, on Rittenhouse Square. The series of fashionable subscription musicales to be given under the direction of Mr. C.

L. Graff, at the Stratford, on Monday mornings, December 5 and 19 and January 2 and 16, will greatly exceed those of last year in interest, and the subscription is so large that the capacity of the parlors at the hotel will be taxed to their utmost. The success of these musicales last year presaged even greater success this season. The list of patronesses is as distinguished as any ever announced for any musicale in Philadelphia, and the series this year will be very enjoyable. For the first musicale Mr.

Graff has engaged Miss Suzanne Adams. This will be Miss Adams' first appearance in Philadelphia, and will be an event of special interest in view of her great London success last summer, when she sang "Juliette" arid "Marguerite" at Covent Garden. A small dinner was given by Mr. and Airs. D.
